The Council of Lutheran Women (CLW) supports several ministries in the Detroit area. Members and guests are reminded to bring donations to general meetings and the annual Women of the Year Luncheon to help support them.
Seminary and Deaconess Student Assistance
Every year CLW asks its member congregations for the names of seminary students from their membership. Proceeds from the Women of the Year Luncheon are used to fund scholarships for these seminary students and also two female students who receive memorial scholarships. Monetary gifts are also accepted. Please consider becoming a Scholarship Sponsor by making a contribution directly to the Scholarship Fund.
Operation Layette
Hope Lutheran Church, Warren hosts CLW’s Operation Layette program. Nora Baars is the coordinator of this program. The CLW collects infant supplies which are assembled into layettes and donated to organizations in southeast Michigan which assist pregnant women and new moms in need. We accept donations of new and gently used items: receiving blankets, cloth diapers, bottles (4 ounce and 8 ounce), infant socks, onesies and sleepers (sizes 2 throught 9 months). Gender-neutral items offer more flexibility.
Monetary gifts are also welcome. Layettes are assembled twice a year at Hope Lutheran Church located at 32400 Hoover Road, Warren, MI. Detroit Area Food Banks
CLW encourages people attending the Women of the Year Luncheon and the Spring and Fall Meetings to bring items for the food banks. Especially needed are: toilet paper, toiletries like toothpaste, deodorant, toothbrushes, soap or shower gel, non perishable food items, “easy open” canned goods, paper products for serving meals, Kleenex, women’s sanitary supplies, adult underwear and socks, warm outerwear and gloves. Monetary gifts also accepted.
Lutheran Center Association
The purpose of the Association is to foster, preserve and defend the common interests of the churches in the Detroit area, which hold membership in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod; to foster and support Christian education; to foster and support charities; and further engage in such enterprises as may be of service to or for the benefit of the Lutheran clergy and laity of Greater Detroit.
Issues and Actions
The CLW Issues & Action Coordinator investigates the issues affecting the Metro Detroit area citizens and reports to the General Assembly. This will include updates from the LCMS’ “Free to be Faithful” Newsletter, which features information on important court cases and religious liberty issues that have significant impact of the lives of Christians and to educate and move people to take informed actions to protect our religious freedoms.

Gregory Seltz, Executive Director, presents champions for Religious Liberty Events. Go to https://www.lcrlfreedom.org to receive the LCRL “Word from the Center”. Like the Lutheran Center for Religious Liberty on Facebook. LCRL provides input, education, advice, advocacy, and resources in the areas of life, marriage and religious liberty and seeks to engage inn discussions in Washington D.C., to establish partnerships and resources for the sake of our churches, schools, universities and seminaries. They are in D.C. to be an ENCOURAGING support to those who are already working very hard on the Hill to protect our religious liberty, to protect an promote the sanctity of life, to guard the basic protections for traditional marriage, to promote the value of private and parochial education.
